So you’ve decided to eat an organic diet during your pregnancy – congratulations! Following an organic diet is one of the best decisions that you can make in order to maintain your baby’s health.  In fact, many experts agree that eating organic foods during pregnancy is the best way to ensure both the health of the mother and baby, as well as aid in the overall development of the baby’s vital organs and systems.  With so much evidence for it, it’s plain to see that eating organic during your pregnancy is the way to go!  But like many things in life, eating organic is easier said than done.  With all of the normal diet restrictions that pregnant women must adhere to, how do you eat organic when you’re pregnant, and still make sure that you’re getting all of the nutrition that you and your baby need?

Thanks to the growing popularity of organic food, it’s now easier than ever to find organic meat, fruits and vegetables – most of which can even be found in your local supermarket!  Make sure that when you’re buying organic food, you can plainly see an organic-certified label on the product.  If you can’t find the label, or you’re not sure if a food or item is organic in general, then it’s probably not – so don’t buy it!  Additionally, when buying fruits and vegetables, be sure that the produce is clearly marked organic.  Usually your supermarket will plainly advertise whether or not their produce is organic, but if you’re not sure, check with someone who will know.  Eating organic fruits and vegetables will help you to not only avoid infecting your baby with pesticides – you’re actually increasing the amount of vital nutrients available to both you and your baby!

When you’re on an organic diet, it’s extremely important to pay attention to what’s in your meat.  Many cattle and chicken farms treat their livestock with growth hormones and chemicals, and these additives can adversely affect your baby’s overall development.  Check the package’s label to see if it’s organic or labeled as “hormone-free”, as these types of meats are safe for both you and your baby to eat.  Also, check online to see if your favorite meat manufacturer is labeled as an “organic farm”; this means that anything that is produced by this farm is organic, and a safe bet to include in your pregnancy diet.

Essentially, eating organic when pregnant involves a lot of label-reading and research, but it doesn’t have to be difficult.  When you make the decision to follow an organic diet during your pregnancy, take the time to surf online and discover the best organic brands out there, and what types of food you should avoid altogether.  Pretty soon, eating organic will come naturally to you – and you’ll want to stay on the diet long after you give birth to your bundle of joy!
